We love to camp and we love to take our Dutch Oven when we go camping! A good cast iron Dutch Oven should be a staple in your camping gear. It’s great to use for these easy dutch oven camping recipes we have included below!
The reason we love ours so much is the fact that they are so durable but yet so simple and easy to use. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a no-brainer!
How to Use a Camping Dutch Oven
To cook over a campfire, you are going to want to make sure yours is cast iron. You can use these with hot coals from the fire, whereas the enamel-coated ones are meant strictly for the oven.
We have a tripod to suspend ours over the fire while it cooks, but you can place it in the embers or put coals on the lid to heat it up.
You will want to make sure yours is seasoned. Fresh Off the Grid has a great post on seasoning a Dutch Oven. Seasoning it will help ensure your food doesn’t stick when your cooking. You can also use parchment liners or foil liners for easy cleanup at the campsite.
A few things we would recommend you get for when you do cook with your Dutch Oven are Heat Gloves, Thermometer, and a Pot Scraper.
You will want the heat gloves because handling a dutch oven that has been in or on a campfire will be very hot. The gloves will keep you from getting burned. A thermometer will help you make sure your food isn’t getting too hot inside and the pot scrapper is for cleaning because you can’t use soap and a sponge ever! It will make your food taste like dawn.
Cleaning Your Dutch Oven
To clean it, you will want to fill it with hot water or bring the water to a boil. Then scrape the food from the sides as best as you can. It’s ok if you can’t get it spotless, believe it or not, this is the part that makes cooking with cast iron so good. After ours is dry, we wipe it down with a little bit of oil and store it until we use it again or it needs reseasoning.
To reseason your dutch oven, you simply coat the pan in oil and heat it in the oven at 350°F for an hour.
