Hobo Eggs: An Easy Camping Breakfast

If you want a great breakfast idea for your next camping trip, stick around…we have a good one for you! Try Hobo Eggs! They are easy and taste amazing!!

Hobo eggs are basically an egg that you fry inside a hole in your bread! You can make it runny (which we love) or you can fry it until it’s done all the way through.

Why Try Hobo Eggs

This recipe is super easy and a great way to keep your egg contained when you fry it on a griddle. It tastes like a runny egg over toast (which we love) and you can even add cheese!

The prep is super simple.

How to Cook Hobo Eggs

You can cook hobo eggs over the fire, on a camp stove, or with a griddle. We use a griddle when we have electricity at our campsite.

We have both an electric griddle and a gas griddle that is run off propane. If you don’t have either of these you can use a the pan method or a cast iron skillet on the campfire.

To make Hobo Eggs:

  • Butter your bread (you don’t have to do this)
  • Cut out your hole in the middle
  • Place bread on the griddle
  • Crack your egg and put it in the hole
  • Let it cook half way then flip
  • After it cooks to desired doneness (3-5 minutes), add some cheese, avacado, or any topping you like

Cooking Tips

If you don’t want to butter your bread, you can add the butter directly to the griddle or pan. It could make the entire process easier plus it will help keep it from sticking.

We like to make sure and put the bread down first, then crack the egg into it.

Be sure the griddle or pan is hot enough to start cooking the egg as soon as it touches the pan.

If you are using cast iron for your pan, make sure it is seasoned prior to cooking on it. This will help keep your egg from sticking.

To make your hole, you can tear the bread (we did this but don’t recommend), use a knife, use a cup or a biscuit cutter.

What to have with Hobo Eggs

We like sausage links or bacon, but you can do ham or even sausage patties. My kids think when we camp, they need meat with breakfast. Its like a treat to have a big breakfast camping.

I love to have avacado slices with my runny egg and toast. If you like avacado, I recommend you give it a try. Plus its a healthy fat!

If you wanted to cook some hashbrowns you can do that also. I would suggest using a griddle or well seasoned cast iron pan for these so they can brown without sticking or burning.

Spice Things Up

If you really want to spice things up, you could take two pieces of bread and put a cheese slice in the middle (like a grilled cheese) then use a biscuit cutter to cut your circle before cracking your egg into it.

If you really want to get daring, put your avacado slices in the middle with the cheese! (OMG!)

You can try a different kind of bread with your Hobo Eggs like Sourdough or Texas Toast. This could give it a different taste that you might love.

The best part about it is you can pretty much do whatever you want and what is anybody gonna say about it?

Final Thoughts

My family loves to camp, we also love our breakfast feasts when we do camp. SImplicity is the main goal when it comes to camping meals so we hope you find this as simple as we do and we also hope you will love it!
