Shit on a shingle is an unofficial military breakfast that refers to meat, gravy and toast. It’s one of my kids favorite camping breakfast recipes, they call it “Poop on a Shingle”.
To make it, you need a meat, gravy and toast. The meat and gravy is the “shit” and the toast is the “shingle”. We use breakfast sausage, pioneer gravy mix packet, bread and shredded cheese.
How to Make Shit on a Shingle
First, if you are camping, you will need a griddle or a Dutch oven (or cast iron skillet) for cooking over the fire. We use a griddle because its easiest. You will also need an electric burner to boil your water and a pot.
You can do all of this over the fire but its easier with a griddle and an electric burner.
We usually tag team this breakfast, but you don’t have to. You will need to brown your sausage on the griddle and make your gravy according to the instructions on the packet. The Pioneer Gravy Mix calls for 2 cups total but I always add more water so that it makes a little more gravy.
The packet says 1 1/2 cup of water in the pot and I add 2. Then you put 1/2 cup of water in another container and add the gravy mix. I always do 3/4 cup for this part.
After you make the gravy and brown the sausage, you will want to drain the grease off of the sausage and add it to the gravy pot. I use a paper plate and some napkins or paper towels to get the grease off while we are camping, then I can throw the plate away afterwards.
The next step is to cook your eggs. We all like runny eggs, but my oldest likes scrambled. It doesn’t matter which kind you use and you can even skip eggs all together if you want to.
We like to add cheese because when does cheese not make anything better?? Never! Lol.
You will need to make toast. You can do this before or after the eggs. We just lay the bread on the griddle and flip it to toast both sides. It’s works perfect!
After your eggs are cooked and the toast is ready you will just need to assemble the shit on a shingle by layering toast, eggs, gravy and then cheese.
We always add cheese because who doesn’t like cheese? The only thing left to do now is eat!!
